Abstract

In 1946, when Scandinavian Airlines System, SAS was founded, there were no electronic computers. All tasks were done by industrious hands and brains. They did a good job, but the increasing number of airplanes and passengers forced SAS to look for electronic computers. SAS Data was founded when SAS acquired its first computer in 1958. Over 3 years SAS Data implemented 3 electronic systems and added 2 new terminals (Agentset and Keyset) to the existing teletype writers. The existing Telegram Center and the three electronic systems SPAS, RAMAC and ZEBRA were interconnected, and a system was built that could do Space Control, Reservation, Booking, Check-in and Load control. Traffic information systems, based on teletypewriters at all gates and in most departments at the airport and many other systems to improve the efficiency, were developed and implemented in the following years. Key aspects of these developments up to year 2000 are described. Most of the systems and applications built and implemented by SAS Data were made to increase efficiency and reduce the human factor. They would never have been implemented if analysis did not reveal a profit, and they helped SAS to be an Airline people wanted to use. SAS would probably not have existed today without these early and groundbreaking ICT solutions.
