An Integrated Control and Intrusion Detection System for Smart Grid Security

Abstract

Several control architectures have been proposed for smart grids based on centralized, decentralized or hybrid models. This chapter describes the Secure Overlay Communications and Control Model, a peer-to-peer, decentralized control and communications model with its own communications protocols and intrusion detection mechanisms that integrate a physical power system and its communications and control systems. This chapter also demonstrates how the model can help mitigate cyber attacks on a power system.
